Fallschirmjager on a Waterwheel

The Great Wheel of the Blogosphere continues to turn whether or not I post every day. "Bush lied," it tells us, ad infinitum. "No he didn't, and if he did, you already knew that and he didn't need to tell the truth for the war to be just," it also tells us, with equally fervid nauseam. It also tells us many things less global; we don't need to discuss them, but they can sure wreck your week with a lot greater precision than dumb stuff like exactly why the President and his cronies are assholes or why the world is a violent and sad place.

There are days when I am convinced that the Great Wheel of the Blogosphere turns best without me caught in it like some poor Fallschirmjager in a Polish paratrooper uniform (Verdammt! I only jumped in to save the little girl!). You may have noticed that day last week. Or not. Your call, no loss either way.

Shut up and vote.

Yes, you have to wait a little while to do that. This is an unfortunate side effect of our chosen form of government, which otherwise does a reasonably good job, compellingly enough so that we collectively yield a bipartisan shudder when anyone talks about any radical changes to its form.

A certain noise level (i.e., a free press) serves, of course, an essential function. But there is such a thing as overload, and I? Am overloaded. Will minds change as a result of the noise level? I'm doubting it. For every person inspired by the abundance of information to care enough to shut up and vote, one or two more will decide that it's all lies by Jew liberals or manipulation by the Trilateral Commission or orbital mind control lasers that require a shoring up of the old tinfoil hat defense.

Not that I'm advocating the free press shutting up and voting, mind you. But the Great Wheel of the Blogosphere could sure use a nice steaming cup.
